Jorma

Even though I missed the chance to see Mission of Burma, I *did* see some music recently when Jim K tossed me his ticket to see Jorma Kaukonen at the Arlington Regent.  Yup.  Hot Fucking Tuna, acoustic and electric.

Jorma is a great guitar player, no doubt, the band really cooked on a few numbers, notably Come Back Baby I Wish You Would and Breadline Blues.  And he has a great mandolin player who took some amazing electric blues solos.  They achieved a powerful crunchy electric blues that reminded me of Zeppelin or Cream at times.  Funny, I don't remember thinking this when I saw Jorma at the  Palladium in New York when I was in high school, maybe 1980. But Jorma never was a great lead, with his subdued vocals, and he can be an utterly atrocious songwriter -- "Full Tempered" is a case in point.

Generationally, I very much felt like the younger brother to all the greybeards who wanted to let their freak flag fly in honor of these Jefferson Airplane veterans.

Missed - Mission of Burma

I just realized that my friends Dave and Kate are going to see the Pixies and Mission of Burma tomorrow night. Plus, earlier this month I missed Patti Smith and Television at Roseland in NYC.

Sigh. Meryl and I are babysitting. I'll be feeling middle-aged and greenly jealous.
